Ikon is a higher education provider with a strong focus on the cultivation of professionals who support the mental health and wellbeing of Australians. We have been helping people help others for over 25 years.

Policies and Services

Admission criteria

The admission criteria below applies to all courses of study:

  • satisfy the admission pathways criteria most relevant to their circumstances
  • satisfy any course specific admission criteria relevant to their course of interest
  • meet the published English Language Proficiency Requirements for their course of interest
  • be at least 18 years of age at course commencement
  • participate in a short informal interview

Ikon has a range of admission pathways available to students of all circumstances and academic backgrounds. The admission pathways are categorised into four groups. Each Applicant Group is described below. You should choose the group most relevant to your circumstances and academic background.

Applicants with higher education study

To gain admission to a higher education course of study at Ikon, applicants with previous higher education study must have completed or partially completed of an accredited higher education qualification. Partial completion requires the successful completion of at least one study period. Applicants must present evidence of the completion of their qualification and academic results.

Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study

To gain admission to a higher education course of study at Ikon, applicants with previous vocational education and training study must have completed an accredited VET qualification at Certificate IV level or higher. Applicants must present evidence of the completion of their qualification and academic results.

Applicants with work and life experience

Applicants who left senior secondary school more than two years ago and have not undertaken accredited VET or HE study may gain entry to a course of study at Ikon in recognition of their professional and life experience. This may include any non-award courses completed in relevant subject areas to the intended course of study at Ikon. Work/Life Applicants must be at least 21 years of age at 1 January in the year they intend to commence their study at Ikon.

Work/Life Applicants must submit a written admission statement outlining their reasons for undertaking the intended course of study and address at least two of the following criteria:

  • Preparations undertaken for Academic Study
  • Interpersonal & Communication Skills
  • Achievements & Experience
  • Knowledge & Skills
  • Equity Access Considerations (if applicable)

The intention of the admission statement is to evidence self-directed application of knowledge and independent judgement to outline how the knowledge, skills and personal qualities gained to date can support the applicant’s potential to succeed in their studies at Ikon. The statement should include evidentiary documentation such as a resume, portfolio of work, references, volunteer certificates, professional memberships, certificates of completion for non-award study etc.

The admission statement should be between 300 and 500 words.

Applicants with a recent secondary education (within the past two years)

Australian Year 12 students

To gain admission to a higher education course of study at Ikon, Secondary Education Applicants must have completed an Australian Senior Secondary Certificate or equivalent within the last two years and achieved the minimum ATAR (or Selection Rank).

Each course has a specific minimum ATAR requirement. See the Admission Criteria for your course of interest.

All Secondary Education Applicants must present evidence of the completion of their Australian Senior Secondary Certificate (or equivalent) and evidence of an ATAR where one has been obtained. International Baccalaureates will be checked against authorised schools.

Selection rank adjustments

Secondary Education Applicants who do not meet the minimum ATAR requirement may still be considered for admission through alternate admission arrangements. This may include ATAR adjustment factors in recognition of strong academic performance, remote or rural residence, and/or hardship suffered during their secondary school studies. The three categories covered are Subjects, Remote Access and Equity Access.

Where eligible, adjustment factors will be awarded added to an applicant’s ATAR to achieve a Selection Rank. Eligible applicants may be awarded up to a maximum of ten adjustment factors.

Applicants may also be eligible to complete an online tertiary admissions test.

Interstate or overseas Year 12

Secondary Education Applicants who completed other Australian Senior Secondary equivalent in Queensland or overseas are eligible to apply for admission and adjustment factors. Comparisons will be made using the ATAR/OP Comparison Table, Overseas Secondary Qualifications and UAC Rank Conversion Table published by the University Admissions Centre (UAC).

Additional information

Access & Equity Entry Scheme

Ikon assures admission requirements provide for the selection of students whose probability of success in their chosen course is high. Equity measures and pathways have been structured to ensure that individuals and groups, for whom artificial barriers to admission exist, have the same access to education.

Applicants seeking consideration for circumstances that have negatively affected their admission options may apply for admission via the Access & Equity Entry Scheme. A range of circumstances will be consideration including but not limited to financial disadvantage, diversity of background, personal disability or medical condition, family disruption and disrupted schooling. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Entry Scheme enables Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to apply for admission via an educational access pathway. For information on how to make an application, please refer to the Domestic Student Admissions Policy.

Domestic applications with overseas qualifications

All overseas equivalent qualifications will be verified using the Australia Education International, National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition Database (Country Education Profiles Online known as CEP Online).

English language requirements

Admissions to all courses of study require a minimum level of English proficiency. The requirements are specific to each course to ensure students have the level of proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking English to participate in and complete their studies.

International applicants and domestic applicants who have not completed secondary school education (or higher) in a country in which English was the instructional language must evidence they meet the English Language Proficiency Requirements for their intended course of study.

How to apply

Apply direct to Ikon Institute of Australia via the APPLY NOW (Domestic Students) icon.

On receipt of your online application, Admissions will send an email with a link to the pre-interview questionnaire. Complete your pre-interview questionnaire.

Next you will receive an email from the Admissions Team confirming your interview time. Where an applicant lives interstate, or in a remote area, the interview can take place via Skype.

After your interview, your application will be assessed against the admission criteria for your intended course.

Enrolment

Acceptance of offer

Successful applicants are sent a Letter of Offer to study at Ikon. Applicants sign and return the Student Declaration attached to the offer to accept their place in the course. Students are then sent a Confirmation of Enrolment which includes a student number, Moodle login, course timetable and the details for orientation. Orientation is compulsory for all new students.

Advanced standing

Applicants may be eligible for course credit in recognition of prior learning. This could result in course credit granted via the grade of Advanced Standing. Applicants must make application for course credit as soon as possible and prior to enrolment. Applications for credit will not be accepted after Census Date. Deferment

Where a student wishes to delay their commencement date, the student must lodge an application to defer their enrolment. For more information, see the Deferral, Withdrawal, Refund and Tuition Assurance Policy.

Financial assistance

Youth and student allowances

Ikon courses are approved for student income support schemes such as Youth Allowance, Austudy and ABSTUDY. For information on eligibility and how to make an application via the Centrelink website.

Loans

Domestic students, who do not wish to pay their tuition fees upfront, have access to the Government FEE-HELP loan assistance plan to pay their fees. FEE-HELP is available to full-time and part-time domestic students enrolled in a course of study at Ikon.

Applicants wishing to access FEE-HELP Loans must meet the eligibility criteria as defined in the Higher Education Support Act 2003 and complete the eCAF form prior to Census Date. The ‘FEE-HELP Information Booklet’ and the ‘FEE-HELP Student Brochure’ provide additional information about the loan scheme and can be downloaded via fees payment options page.
