Admission Criteria

All applicants

An undergraduate degree is typically your first tertiary degree, such as an Associate or Bachelor's degree. Avondale has general admission criteria, which determines your basis for admission (outlined below) and we have specific admission criteria for our courses that you must also meet. For specific admission criteria and detailed course information for the Avondale course you want to study, search courses.

Applicants with higher education study

If you have completed (or partially completed) a degree at an accredited university or higher education provider, you may be able to use the results you obtained from that qualification as the basis for entry to Avondale. You will need to provide a record of your achievement along with evidence of having successfully completed at least four units at a bachelor’s level (i.e. at an Australian Qualifications Framework AQF Level 7).

Completed bridging or enabling course

Avondale does not offer bridging or enabling courses. If you completed an accredited bridging or enabling course at another institution, you may be able to use the results you obtained as a basis for entry to Avondale. You will need to provide a record of your achievement with your application for assessment.

Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study

If you have a VET certificate (excluding trade certificates), Diploma or Advanced Diploma qualification recognised by the AQF, you may be able to use this as the basis for entry to Avondale.

Admission is dependent on completion of the VET course, the study area and the level of academic performance achieved. For specific admission criteria for the Avondale course you want to study, search courses

In some circumstances, your previous study may count as credit towards your Avondale course. This can reduce both the cost and length of your course. For more information, please check out how to apply for Advanced Standing.

Applicants with work and life experience

Avondale recognises relevant work and life experiences, providing the opportunity to complete an entrance test if you:

  • Do not have a sufficient ATAR or equivalent; or
  • Did not undertake or complete previous recognised study; or
  • Have not completed an accredited bridging or enabling course; or
  • Are not currently completing the High School Certificate (HSC), New Zealand NCEA or International Baccalaureate (IB).

The entrance test is offered to domestic students only – i.e. an Australian citizen; holder of a permanent humanitarian visa residing in Australia; a New Zealand citizen; or holder of other permanent visas.

For information about the entrance test or to apply, download and submit a uniTEST and Tertiary Online Writing Assessment (TOWA) Application Form by email to study@avondale.edu.au.

Applicants with a recent secondary education (within the past two years)

Australian Year 12 students

You will meet the academic requirements for admission if you gain the minimum score or higher in one of the following on completion of year 12 in Australia:

  • Tertiary Academic Rank (ATAR)
  • International Baccalaureate (IB).

The minimum score required for entry into a course can be found on the Avondale website in the admission criteria section of the information for each course.

Selection rank adjustments
Equity adjustments

If you have suffered hardship because of circumstances beyond your control, Avondale will consider this as part of the assessment of your application to study our courses. Hardship considerations include financial hardship, disrupted schooling, home and environment responsibilities, English language difficulty, personal illness/disability.

Location adjustments

If you are an Australian applicant, you will have your ATAR (or equivalent) adjusted by five points to a maximum of 10 points (excluding nursing), if you:

  • Are a resident in the local region;
  • Are a resident in a remote region;
  • Completed your HSC in one of Avondale’s target schools.

If you are an Australian applicant applying to the Bachelor of Nursing, you will have your ATAR (or equivalent) adjusted by a maximum of five points where these adjustment factors apply to you.

Subject adjustments

You may gain entry into an Avondale undergraduate degree with a HSC English score of Band 4 in the standard subject level, or higher. This does not apply for entry into the Bachelor of Nursing.

Criteria that may apply in addition to the ATAR

Some courses require applicants to submit additional selection criteria such as a personal statement or declaration. Additional selection criteria can be found in the specific course information on the Avondale website.

Other admission options
Undergraduate Certificate in Univesity Preparation

Avondale's university preparation course is a direct pathway to undergraduate studies at Avondale. You could start your degree after one semester (four units), and your completed units may apply as credit towards a degree. Consider this pathway to benefit from bespoke academic support, small class sizes and practical learning.

Special Testing

If your results are not sufficient to meet the entry requirements for your chosen degree, we may access your individual HSC subject results or ask you to undertake an entrance test (i.e., uniTEST and TOWA).

Overseas Year 12
New Zealand

If you provide evidence of satisfactory completion of Year 13 with New Zealand NCEA Level 3 results identifying you have attained University Entrance, you will meet the academic requirements for entry into an undergraduate degree at Avondale.

Other Countries

Applicants with overseas qualifications will have their qualifications assessed for equivalency to Australian qualifications under Avondale’s Admission to Higher Education Undergraduate Courses Policy and/or the Country Education Profiles.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

If you provide evidence that you are Aboriginal or from the Torres Strait Islands, you will have your ATAR (or equivalent) adjusted by five points, up to a maximum of 10 points where other adjustment factors apply
